tHE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER.  THE TIME IS NOW FOR YOU TO BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY

Why choose Seakola?

In addition to scientific knowledge and data collection, Seakola’s Marine Biology Voyage program promotes lifelong learning through development of 21st century skills and competencies essential for today’s active global citizens

Seakola’s unique educational Marine Biology Voyage program includes:

  • Scientific knowledge and increased understanding of the oceans

  • Authentic and fun practice of writing skills with different text types

  • A variety of engaging collaborative activities, both hands-on and using edutech

  • Personal growth and development of lifelong learning skills

At various moments of the trip, students actively engage in writing text types such as

Comparison | Persuasion | Explanation | Description | Narration

In a fun, collaborative way, students write descriptions of the colorful underwater world, persuade an audience in a passionate speech, explain scientific concepts based on gathered data, compare virtual worlds and reality of the oceans, and tell their personal story of the sea. Activities include choice and voice, teamwork in various group sizes, elements of metacognition, reflection and self-evaluation.

Seakola’s program complements curricula of middle or high school science, environmental studies or even English courses

Current, most up-to-date resources and methodologies have been incorporated into the design of Seakola’s program, including appropriate, effective EduTech tools.  All activities, assignments and accompanying materials have been created by an expert curriculum developer with decades of active teaching experience in international and intercultural school settings

Teachers - or rather, facilitators of learning - will receive access to downloadable, fillable digitally and/or printable handouts, as well as links to collaborative spaces where students will learn together and share their pair or group work outcomes.  Helpful tips and links to EduTech tools will provide extra support for facilitating the students’ learning, so teachers can enjoy the sea voyage stress-free

Teachers will also receive detailed notes on possible alterations or adaptations of the activities if desired.  With advance notice, teachers can include (wherever possible) their own content, depending on the requirements of their course syllabus or their students’ needs

seakola and the ib diploma program

The IB Diploma Program includes a variety of science subjects at HL and SL levels, and Seakola Marine Biology Voyage can provide an excellent field work experience for students aiming to complete their Group 4 project, or the IA in EES, for example

Since the purpose of the Group 4 project is to introduce students to the idea that science is a group activity performed by teams, it makes sense to put a Seakola Marine Biology Voyage on the agenda.  Exploring the ocean, supporting the environment, and keeping the fragile marine ecosystem alive takes a concerted effort of many individuals, from experienced divers (passing on their knowledge and skills to the younger generation) and university scientists (receiving the collected data) to vocal advocates for the cause (coached and supported by the built-in Seakola personal development program)

The quite diverse ESS IB syllabus covers many artificial and natural processes that occur in the environment, for example Ecosystems and ecology, Biodiversity and conservation, Water and aquatic food production systems and societies, Climate change, Human resource use, among others.  All of these topics can include a marine voyage during which students conduct hands-on research, collect data for their own inquiry projects and contribute data to Australian universities cooperating with Seakola

ESS IB syllabus is expected to contain practical activities and individual investigation, aiming to help students:

– Understand the growing environmental issues in the world around them

– Acquire the knowledge regarding environment

– Become aware of the links between human and natural systems

– Become aware of the environmental problems

– Propose certain solutions to growing environmental issues

Seakola Marine Biology Voyage are a perfect way to fulfill all of the above aims.  In the planned reflection activities on board the ship, students can reflect on their data collection, ponder their awareness of issues, discuss the links, and suggest possibilities of taking action to foster sustainability of marine ecosystems
